Artist's Description
This painting depicts the gazebo in the pond by the entrance to Heritage Hunt in Gainesville, VA on a cold morning after a light snowfall. This is my second painting of this scene, the first being "Cold Winter Day." After adjusting the composition somewhat from the first painting, I started the painting process by doing an underpainting in yellow ochre. Over that, I painted the entire scene using only Payne's grey, burnt umber and white. To get some more color in the sky, water and wreath, I then used very small amounts of cerulean blue, cadmium red and permanent green light.

I made my first attempt at painting with oils in 1977 and immediately fell in love with the medium. Since then, I have painted in spurts, often experiencing long periods of inactivity. But once I was exposed to oil painting I have thought about painting almost constantly. After I retired in 1996, I became active in the performing arts as a musician, singer, actor, theater set designer and director. Through all this, I never stopped thinking about painting, and now painting has become my primary creative outlet. I have never had any formal art lessons.
