Artist's Description

This painting depicts an early morning winter scene at Quantico Creek in Prince William Forest Park in Triangle, Virginia. I painted this, with permission, from photos taken by Virginia photographer Karen Heppenstall on December 24, 2009. I added some pale yellow to the snow to enhance the illusion of sunlight, and browns to bolster up the tree trunks, but mostly I painted this using a triadic color scheme of red-violet, blue-green and yellow-orange. These three colors are significantly different from the actual colors in the reference photos, but the painting somehow seems more realistic than the photos do.
