Description
This is a scene of homes in Heritage Hunt in Gainesville, Virginia on the morning after an early season snowfall. I painted this from photos I took on December 20, 2010. I painted two versions of this painting at the same time. This one was painted largely wet in wet with thick applications of paint. The other was painted with thin, transparent layers over a grisaille underpainting. This one was, by far, the most successful of the two. It seems I can get much more realism in snowscapes with thick application of paint. In this one, I also simplified the background quite a bit which was a major improvement over the way the scene actually appeared in the photos. I like the way the basic, complementary color scheme at the center of attention really catches the eye.
