I created this painting from photos I took in 1978 of a green-hulled boat with striking red sails as it passed one of the San Juan Islands that lie between the Washington mainland and Canada's Vancouver Island. In the background is the Cascade Range.

I made my first attempt at painting with oils in 1977 and immediately fell in love with the medium. Since then, I have painted in spurts, often experiencing long periods of inactivity. But once I was exposed to oil painting I have thought about painting almost constantly. After I retired in 1996, I became active in the performing arts as a musician, singer, actor, theater set designer and director. Through all this, I never stopped thinking about painting, and now painting has become my primary creative outlet. I have never had any formal art lessons.
