Artist's Description

This scene is near the center of the old city of Tallinn, Estonia. It shows the steeple of Toomkirik (the Dome Church, a.k.a. St. Mary's) and surrounding roof lines. I painted this from photos I took in May 2008. At first glance, the impression is that the Toomkirik steeple is black. As I studied it, I was delighted with all the turquoise and red shades I found in it. I painted the building facade in the lower right in the local colors then created the deep purple shadow by overpainting with thin layers of ultramarine blue and alizarin crimson. I compressed the original view quite a bit, moving the building on the right closer to the steeple to create a more interconnected abstract pattern of shapes.

I made my first attempt at painting with oils in 1977 and immediately fell in love with the medium. Since then, I have painted in spurts, often experiencing long periods of inactivity. But once I was exposed to oil painting I have thought about painting almost constantly. After I retired in 1996, I became active in the performing arts as a musician, singer, actor, theater set designer and director. Through all this, I never stopped thinking about painting, and now painting has become my primary creative outlet. I have never had any formal art lessons.
