Artist's Description

This painting is a view of the bandstand at Cogshall Park in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, done from photos I took in June 1994.To create the painting, I drew a detailed image of the scene with pencil, then painted over it with many thin glazes of transparent oil colors. Except for the foliage in the foreground, which I painted with thicker transparent paint, I accomplished the entire painting with transparent glazes. The original is in a private collection.

Alan Mager

I made my first attempt at painting with oils in 1977 and immediately fell in love with the medium. Since then, I have painted in spurts, often experiencing long periods of inactivity. But once I was exposed to oil painting I have thought about painting almost constantly. After I retired in 1996, I became active in the performing arts as a musician, singer, actor, theater set designer and director. Through all this, I never stopped thinking about painting, and now painting has become my primary creative outlet. I have never had any formal art lessons. From books, and more recently the Internet, I have learned a lot. Mostly, however, I figure things out for myself, and this is the most rewarding part of the experience for me. My...
