Artist's Description

This picture shows a portion of the First Baptist Church in Elmira, New York which I painted from photos I took in July 1994. I started the painting in January 2000 then lost my inspiration and didn't complete it until March 2008. (Crazy, I know.) The most interesting and challenging part of the painting was the large pale blue-green window on the right side. I got the effect I was looking for by applying 10-12 layers of transparent glazes. I used a lot of transparent glazes in other parts of this painting, too, most notably on the door and the prominent shadows on each side of the door.

Alan Mager

I made my first attempt at painting with oils in 1977 and immediately fell in love with the medium. Since then, I have painted in spurts, often experiencing long periods of inactivity. But once I was exposed to oil painting I have thought about painting almost constantly. After I retired in 1996, I became active in the performing arts as a musician, singer, actor, theater set designer and director. Through all this, I never stopped thinking about painting, and now painting has become my primary creative outlet. I have never had any formal art lessons. From books, and more recently the Internet, I have learned a lot. Mostly, however, I figure things out for myself, and this is the most rewarding part of the experience for me. My...
