Artist's Description

This is a view of the Olympic Mountains in Olympic National Park from a vantage point south of Port Angeles, Washington. I painted if from photos I took in the summer of 1978. I exaggerated the density of the field of flowers to create an emphatic near-complement to the dark blue-violet of the mountains. This remains one of my favorite paintings because of its stark simplicity and its strong abstract design.

Alan Mager

I made my first attempt at painting with oils in 1977 and immediately fell in love with the medium. Since then, I have painted in spurts, often experiencing long periods of inactivity. But once I was exposed to oil painting I have thought about painting almost constantly. After I retired in 1996, I became active in the performing arts as a musician, singer, actor, theater set designer and director. Through all this, I never stopped thinking about painting, and now painting has become my primary creative outlet. I have never had any formal art lessons. From books, and more recently the Internet, I have learned a lot. Mostly, however, I figure things out for myself, and this is the most rewarding part of the experience for me. My...
